Build a perfect bedroom to induce big dreams

September 4, 2017

We spend, on average, a third of our lives sleeping, which, as far as I am concerned is a third of my life well spent. They say it is the simple things in life that really matter, and I know that after a long day, crawling into your own bed where you feel safe, warm and you know, at that point in time you can allow yourself to completely relax and have your mind take you away from the aches and strains of your hectic life, to a place of pure calm.

I am a great believer in spending money in making this room reflect exactly what it is meant to do when renovating or upgrading your home. Your bedroom is not just for sleep. Many people with busy families use their bedroom as an escape to read a book, watch a movie or just have some alone time, so it’s so important to remember that it is not an end of the budget room that just needs a lick of paint and a cheap bed and side tables. You really need to carefully plan your colour pallet, lighting, furniture and also how you want to split your budget up, to get the best out of the room that best reflects you.

Plan and prep

If you enjoy a period look, you may want to look at a classic style pendant light, as they have made a strong comeback in the last few years with many industrial feel lights flooding the market. With so much choice and the option of having dimmers on your switch, it can be a great decision to go with a pendant because if you want to change the feel of your room, you can very easily change the light to give a whole new feel to an existing room.

Frame the picture

Ok, so now you have put up your plaster board and your lighting is chosen, now you need to look at different options for architraves and cornice options. Some can help create a period feel in an older house that can be achieved with a modern twist to create a perfect marriage between new and old.

This is one of my favorites as it is so minimal. It's called a p50 Shadowline, this is a profile fitted by the gyprocker that is set in with the gyprock then painted. Make sure you have someone that knows how to install it properly as it can crack in a short period of time. A flat square beading can give a similar modern minimalist feel to your room as well.

Your flooring needs to be decided at this point too. If you want to go with an existing timber floor, it’s a good idea to get the first sand done so it is ready to just have a last little sand then coated. If you are having carpet laid or floating floor, it's a good idea to get it done ready so everything is nice and ready for the skirtings to go down over the top. (Just get your painter to cover the floors!!)

A splash of colour

Choosing the colour for the walls of your bedroom is really about tapping into what induces the feeling of calm and relaxation within you and either using that as a main wall colour, or if it’s a very bold colour, maybe go for a softer colour on the walls, then use art and furnishings to bring your colour into the room. Some people love a dark bedroom to create a feel of seclusion and maybe even seduction, and others want a light colour to wake up and have that fresh day feeling when the sun hits the walls. Wallpaper is making a comeback in the world of design, especially for a feature wall, so check that out as an option. There are so many designs and textures it could be the thing that makes your bedroom stand out from the rest.

Either way, it’s a very personal choice and it’s your bedroom so go nuts.

Furnish to finish.

Now comes the fun part (if you still have budget left). Beds are an obvious thing to never skimp on if you can help it, they can be the difference between you waking up every day happy, or not! There are some amazing new companies coming out to swipe the rug from under the feet of old mattress companies so their prices are very competitive. They come delivered to your door with some of them, a 90-night guarantee! Some of them will even pick it up for free if you are not happy with it! That's awesome. So shop around and it’s always a good idea to go to the stores to check out how firm you need your mattress first, then shop online for the best deal.

It’s always nice to have a nice chair in your room for reading or just relaxing, it is also a great excuse to have coloured cushions to pick out colours in a painting on the wall which allows the colour to stand out more and flow throughout the room.

Built ins are amazing for keeping the flow in your room without bulky chests of draws and random Ikea cupboards. I feel they are worth the investment, especially in a new build or renovation. Shop around for a good joinery company that will take care during installation and fits everything properly, it can be a huge mistake to try and skimp on finishing work.

Depending on what’s left of your budget you can choose from a huge range of blinds and curtains. From block out floor length curtains to budget louver blinds the options for window coverings are endless, so it really comes down to a budget matter.
